Thore’s head felt heavy with a thousand questions that twisted and turned through his mind, like a roller coaster. Did something go wrong during the hypnosis? Was I not relaxed enough? Why in the devil’s name can’t I remember the jog? What happened in that time frame, between me putting on my jogging clothes and me finishing the glass of water after the run? Can’t, or worse, don’t I want to remember? What on earth is wrong with me?

“…What would you rather have, Mr. Albertsen?” The nurse bent over him, and gave him a questioning look.

“Sorry,” he said, looking down at the floor. “I wasn't listening to you. What did you say?”

“I asked if you would prefer a turkey dish or a pork dish. Both are on the lunch menu today.” She let out a giggle as if she had made a joke. Thore didn’t understand it, though.

“Surprise me,” he said, managing a smile. Honestly, he didn’t care. There were much more important things to sort out at the moment, and he wasn’t hungry anyway. His head was buzzing quietly, as if hundreds of bees were flying like crazy around in it.

Hopefully, that terrible headache won’t start again!

The nurse briskly pushed his wheelchair down the hospital hallway, and moments later, he was escorted into his room. Bjørn stood up as Thore was wheeled in.

“So, did you find out anything?” he blurted out.

Thore was silent, and it was like a stab in his heart when he looked into the joyful eyes of his friend. Yes, Bjørn had also certainly expected more from this hypnosis. He wasn’t the only one.

“Let me get the patient back to his bed first, then you can talk to him,” the nurse said. “But only for a short time. Mr. Albertsen needs a lot of rest right now.”

Thore stood up from the wheelchair, and for a blink of an eye, the entire room spun. The dizziness disappeared as suddenly as it had come, and he sat down on the edge of the bed, supported by the nurse, before lying down again. A feeling of relief coursed through his body. For a few more moments, the nurse scurried around Thor’s bed, then wordlessly disappeared from the room.

Bjørn pulled the visitor’s chair closer to Thore’s bed and sat down.

“So? Tell me!”

Thore stared at the white ceiling, which seemed as sterile as he felt. Empty. Burned out. Disinfected.

“I remembered even less than I thought I did.” He could only manage a whisper. The disappointment was just too great. The longing for answers burned like a blazing fire on his soul. But would the search ever come to an end? Would he ever know what had happened to his Lana?

“What does that mean?” Bjørn asked, confused. “This session must have done at least something.”

“No!” he yelled back at him and spun his head around. Bjørn jerked back right away. “It didn’t do anything. Nothing at all. I’m missing the entire jog. Do you understand the implications of my amnesia? I could have done something to Lana, even killed her, and I can’t remember.
